Get Artsy in Taipei at Huashan and Songshan Creative Parks

Made with fabric and suspended by corset-like strings, I’m not exactly sure what you’d call this. Is it a performance meme? Avante garde crochet? Whatever it is, it encapsulates perfectly what Huashan and Songshan are about — creativity.

Not keen on joining my sister at the National Museum, Ren and I wanted to experience something more contemporary so we opted to spend the day at these two art parks instead. Both are former industrial factories that were abandoned for many years before being repurposed into full-time arts and cultural venues.

“Arts and cultural venue” is a vague term so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Based on what I read, they showcase art but aren’t just museums or galleries. They hold live cultural shows and events but aren’t performance art theaters. On top of that, they hold fashion shows, product design expos, art seminars, and lifestyle bazaars all within an historic, industrial setting.

Confused but intrigued, it wasn’t until we went did I finally grasp what these two places are about. Organic, ever-evolving spaces fully dedicated to the arts, they’re exactly what that installation piece says they are — places for creating.

What a fun way to spend the day in Taipei.

Huashan 1914 Creative Park

A former sake and ginseng winery, Huashan Creative Park was abandoned for nearly a decade before being restored into a full fledged art center in 2005. Now one of the city’s primary creative centers, it’s a hosting ground for some of Taiwan’s most significant cultural activities and exhibits.

Apart from being an exhibit space and cultural events venue, there are many restaurants, cafes, and shops at Huashan.

Songshan Cultural & Creative Park

Another industrial space turned arts venue, Songshan was once a thriving factory that was home to Taiwan’s first modernized tobacco plant. Defunct since 1998, the factory was declared a historic site in 2001 before being converted into a full-time arts venue in 2011. Like Huashan, it’s now become one of the city’s most important hubs for cultural exhibits and performances.

Not entirely sure what this exhibit was about but it was cool. Had something to do with universal design.

Large and warehouse-like, one of the main exhibit halls had this funky, “green” cafe.

Our favorite part of Songshan. I don’t remember what the space was called but it was both a cafe and shop.

I loved how they arranged the seating for the cafe. Despite being in a large room with high ceilings, each table felt private. They set up these slatted dividers with dim lighting between tables to create privacy.

I felt like I were invading a private moment. Secluded at the very corner of the room were these leather tufted couches fronting a large factory window. What a great space to just chill out all day and read a book!
